About this course

This hands-on training is designed for Public Information Officers and government communicators who want to elevate their agency’s communication strategy. This course focuses on leadership, coordination and message management in complex environments, not just the tactical work of writing news releases and conducting media interviews. 

Students will leave with practical tools they can implement immediately, including systems for managing media, leadership and external communications during critical events. 


Topics include: 

  • The evolving role of the Public Information Officer in complex incidents 
  • Strategic messaging that keeps information clear under pressure 
  • Coordinating multi-agency messaging in a Joint Information Center (JIC) 
  • Systems that streamline communication and reduce decision fatigue 
  • Spokesperson preparation and a scenario-based exercise

There will be hands-on portions of this course where a smartphone and/or laptop can be helpful

Course times are 9:00 a.m. - 4:00 p.m.
